Boston Celtics coach, Brad Stevens, and former Celtics coach/ current coach of the Los Angeles Clippers Doc Rivers, joined Bob Ryan for a podcast at the Auerbach Center. Doc Rivers coached the Boston Celtics to an NBA Championship in 2008.
Boston Celtics’ Brad Stevens and L.A. Clippers’ Doc Rivers joined Bob Ryan at the Auerbach Center for an episode of the Bob Ryan Boston Podcast. Bob Ryan had a genius idea of getting the two coaches together for a “Past & Present” edition of his podcast.
The questions Ryan conducted in this episode were great and both coaches seemed to really enjoy themselves. He was able to ask the two coaches about their views of AAU, and what it was like when they were playing. Doc thinks it’s important to play multiple sports while growing up and then “specialize at one. Deciding when that is, is the hard part.”
Doc Rivers has some love for rookie Tacko Fall. During the “Basketball without Borders” program, Doc was able to meet and spend some time with Tacko Fall, and had some great things to say about the Celtics rookie. Both coaches’ express how extraordinary Tacko Fall is and that he is in fact an NBA player.
Doc Rivers: “Tacko was there [Basketball without Borders], he’s a great guy by the way.”
Brad Stevens: “He’s a great kid. He’s a really good player and he’s an NBA player. He would love to really just blend in, but that’s not possible for him. He was a scholar athlete of the year in his conference and he handles all of the attention and everything really well. Through the ‘Basketball without Borders’ program, Tacko was able to go back to Senegal for the first time in seven years. He’s an amazing story.”
Stevens gets into how he feels about his players competing for Team USA, and being coached by Pop. I think this pretty much sums it up.
“They’ve got great coaches coaching them; it’s so great they’re being coached by Pop (and staff). Just being around that team is great. Our guys wanted to be there, and I appreciate that about them. They will be well prepared for the season.”
I get the feeling that Doc still feels connected to the Boston Celtics, even after parting ways with the C’s back in 2013. And he should, he was part of a championship team for the organization. The city, fans, and organization will always have love for Doc Rivers.
Brad Stevens has accomplished a lot with the Boston Celtics. The future is looking very good for the team, as they have a solid core to move forward with.
Find some time to listen to this episode. It’s truly great to listen to these two great coaches talk basketball, together.
