Boston Celtics sign Kaiser Gates to a training camp contract.  Gates is a 2018 undrafted forward out of Xavier.  After a good summer league, he will compete for the final roster spot on the Celtics.

The Boston Celtics signed Kaiser Gates to a training camp contract today.  Gates is a 6’8” forward, who went undrafted in 2018 out of Xavier.  After spending a year improving in the G-League, Gates has another opportunity to make an NBA roster.  With an open roster spot up for grabs, the Celtics have many likely suitors who all are capable of earning that spot.

Kaiser Gates will compete with a number of guys for the final spot for the Boston Celtics.  One of those guys include  summer league “fan favorite” Tacko Fall.  Last season, Gates played in 50 games last season for the Chicago Bulls G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls, averaging: 12.7 points per game and 6.4 rebounds, while shooting 40.9% from the field.

In the 2019 NBA Summer League, Gates logged in 8.2 points and 4.6 rebounds, for the Los Angelis Clippers.  Gates is like a Swiss-army knife; he is very versatile offensively.  He can shoot, drive, pick and roll, and is pretty great at shooting off the pass.

Even with the addition of Kaiser Gates, the Boston Celtics still only have 19 players under contract, still leaving the option of adding another man for training camp.  I don’t know if there is a spot here for him, unless the C’s make some moves and make it work.

Players on two way contracts are very flexible to a team.  Maybe there is a scenario in which the Celtics part ways with Max Strus, which would give the team the availability to sign a player to a two way contract.  Maybe the Celtics think Kaiser Gates will fit the system better and they give him Max Sturs’ two-way spot.  Or maybe Tacko Fall in fact makes the 15 man roster.

Whichever way the C’s decide to go on this, I wouldn’t mind seeing Kaiser Gates in the Celtics organization at the end of it.  The upside of this player is through the roof.  As I mentioned earlier, he’s a Swiss army knife.  There’s no body better for a guy like that to be with than Brad Stevens.
